Leukocyte > Polonez was introduced in 1978. At that time the communist government delusion was that it represented an equivalent to Volvo. Indeed it was an unusually luxurious car with all kinds of opulent touches. The modern 5-door body was a high-end design by Giorgietto Gugiaro and it was assembled on a robotic line. It was supposed to be powered by modern engines licensed from Fiat. Unfortunately, the funds were already drying up, so the mechanicals were lifted straight from Polski Fiat 125p - a hopelessly outdated vehicle even at that time. Still it was a dream car of the communist block. Nothing came even close.
Leukocyte > When I was a little boy this was the most impressive car one could buy (or rather dream of buying). This is a great example of the early series, dubbed "Borewicz" after a hero of a famous Polish police TV drama of the time. It seems to be vary rare now.
Leukocyte > A classic period touch on the dashboard. The car had a very massive center console, an impressive full set of instruments. It even featured an adjustable steering wheel - a rarity in 1978. One can also see a period Polish radio/cassette player made by UNITRA.
Leukocyte > Early "Borewicz" front end - now very rare, as most Polonez cars were produced with updated "coupe" or "caro" fronts.
Leukocyte > FSO Polonez in its natural ecosystem...
Leukocyte > FSC Zuk pick-up truck. Zuk was produced between 1957 and 1997. It was based on a Polish version of Soviet GAZ M-20 Pobieda sedan. It used to be a very common vehicle in the Polish countryside.
Leukocyte > FSC Zuk - a minivan for 1958 :-)
Leukocyte > Air cooled, rear-engined, 2+2 monster coupe ... a Fiat 126p 650E. A death-trap on wheels license-built in Poland since 1973. Somehow the communist block had a tendency to get Fiat designs, perhaps to support the Italian comrades.
Leukocyte > Here in Ferrari red. Looks exactly like my first car back in high-school times - a face-lifted version of ca. 1987.
